What are the FEASTS of the Lord?
Leviticus 23:1-37 (KJV)
1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts. 3 Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings. 4 These are the feasts of the LORD, even holy convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons.
THE FEASTS OF THE LORD
The children of Israel were required to come to the Temple in Jerusalem three times a year to celebrate the Feasts of the Lord according to Leviticus 23. As we study the Scriptures, we can see how everything in the Torah’s instruction regarding the sacrificial system and Temple worship all pointed to a coming Messiah. The priestly duties carried out in the Temple during the feasts were yearly enactments of a coming Messiah who would ultimately fulfill all of them. Jesus, Himself, said “the Scriptures testify of Me” (John 5:39). In order to better understand the New Testament (New Covenant), it is imperative to understand the ancient Jewish writings. The Messiah of Israel is Jewish, the New Testament is a Jewish book, and the Gospels and Epistles are written in the language of the festivals of the Lord, as outlined in Leviticus 23. The ancient Rabbinical writings in regard to the Temple practices, the culture and customs, along with the customs of the ancient Jewish wedding, as it was celebrated at the time of Jesus Christ, are important considerations in understanding the significance of these feasts. They all play a prophetic role pertaining to the first and second coming of Jesus Christ. The Messiah came to earth the first time, born of a virgin as Son of Man and Son of God (Immanuel - “God with us”). He came as the kinsman redeemer - the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. He will return as the Lion of the Tribe of Judah. The Fall Feasts will be literally fulfilled when He comes as King of Kings, and Lord of Lords, to bring judgment, and to rule and reign from Jerusalem. The Fall Feast of Tabernacles will be the fulfillment of God’s plan and His desire to “tabernacle” with man.
In addition to the prophetic understanding of the Feasts of the Lord, there are also spiritual applications which are important for believers to understand. The spiritual applications are progressive steps of faith, a process of redemption, justification, and sanctification.
UNDERSTANDING THE BIBLICAL FEASTS OF THE LORD
SPRING FEASTS:
PASSOVER UNLEAVENED BREAD SHAVUOT/PENTECOST
FALL FEASTS:
FEAST OF TRUMPETS DAY OF ATONEMENT FEAST OF TABERNACLES
Each of these seven Feasts of the Lord has a Biblical, Prophetic and Spiritual Application. PROPHETIC APPLICATIONS Yet to be fulfilled are the Fall Feasts, which portray the second coming of Yeshua Jesus Christ. The Feast of Yom Teruah, the Feast of Trumpets (the awakening blast), represents a time of judgment and resurrection of the dead (referred to as “the day no one knows” because it falls on the beginning of the month - a New Moon). Ten days later, is Yom Kippur ( the Day of Atonement) - known as the “Day of Covering” or “Face to Face,” which represents the 2nd coming of Christ, when the nation of Israel will accept the atoning sacrifice of Yeshua Jesus, and He will come to earth to rule and reign. This is followed by the Feast of Sukkot (Tabernacles), when Yeshua Jesus will celebrate the wedding feast and will dwell (Tabernacle) on earth and rule reign from Jerusalem for 1000 years, after which there will be the new heavens and a new earth - eternity (the olam haba). A number of believers are beginning to understand that the Biblical Feasts of the LORD are for our benefit, yet today. However, there is still much that is not fully understood about how to observe (or keep) them. Certainly, there is no temple in Jerusalem, in which one could fulfill the Torah requirements of coming to Jerusalem for these three annual feasts. However, most believers would agree that the significance of the feasts today is in understanding the prophetic role of the feasts pertaining to the first and second coming of Yeshua Jesus Christ. We understand that the Spring feasts of Pesach (Passover), Unleavened Bread and Firstfruits were fulfilled in Yeshua Jesus’ sacrifice of Himself as the Passover Lamb, the unblemished, perfect sacrifice, who became “sin” (leaven) for us, and was resurrected to life (the firstfruits of the resurrection) on the Feast of Firstfruits. The Feast of Shavuot/Pentecost was fulfilled at the time of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit recorded in the book of Acts, and this feast is still being fulfilled as believers receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
SPIRITUAL APPLICATIONS
While this understanding is necessary in understanding the prophetic plan of Abba Father, there are also spiritual applications which are important for believers to understand. The spiritual applications are progressive steps of faith, a process of redemption, justification, and sanctification.
